Looking for an off-road SUV? Check out our top picks for the best SUVs for sale in 2022. Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly vehicle or something that can handle intense terrain, we’ve got you covered. These SUVs are sure to get you where you need to go, no matter what!
2022 Jeep Wrangler
The Wrangler retains its off-roading roots. With body-on-frame construction and solid axles, the fundamental Wrangler characteristics remain. It comes in two- and four-door versions. The variety of choices may rapidly drive up the price. With this combination, we achieved a total of 18 mpg.
An optional 2.0-liter turbo engine is now also available, which has enough power for most drivers. The handling still isn’t great. Regardless of roof option, the ride is stiff and bouncy, with a lot of wind noise at highway speeds. A variety of transmissions are available: CVT, HRX, 4EAT, 6MT, and 6AT. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard in the 2019 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Crew Cab; a six-speed manual gearbox is optional. Only two 4WD systems are available: ECOTRIC and Terrain Response 2.
2022 Ford Bronco
The resurrected Bronco squarely targets the Jeep Wrangler, reviving a rivalry from the 1960s. The Bronco comes in two- and four-door variants with a standard soft top and an optional removeable hardtop. Every model has four-wheel drive and detachable doors. The 2.3-liter four-cylinder turbo is standard, while the 2.7-liter turbo V6 we tested produces good power.
The Bronco’s ride and handling have been owing to a rear locking differential, excellent ground clearance, and short overhang. The trail camera projects your route on the infotainment screen, allowing you to align the front wheels off-road. Even with the hardtop, wind noise is loud, and stopping distances are long. FCW and AEB with pedestrian detection are standard active safety features on the 2022 Ford Bronco.
2022 Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro
The 4Runner’s ride is adequate for off-roading, but it falls short of most rivals. The strong 4.0-liter V6 is rough-sounding and gas-guzzling, achieving a dismal 18 mpg overall. The car has poor visibility and a high center of gravity, creating body lean while cornering. There is restricted mobility due to a big step-in and low ceiling, as well as good ground clearance and optional underbody skid plates. The part-time 4WD system is equipped with a low range for difficult off-road terrains; Limited trims come with a 4WD system that can be kept engaged indefinitely.
We appreciate the simple controls, which include big buttons and knobs, as well as ordinary Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. The third back row can be folded down to make space for cargo or passengers. The power-retractable rear window is useful. FCW and AEB are standard on higher trims, while BSW and RCTW are required on lower trims.
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk
The redesigned Grand Cherokee from 2022 will be somewhat larger than the previous model. The following two powertrains will be kept: a 3.6-liter V6 and a 5.7-liter V8. The new 4xe plug-in hybrid model uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor and offers 25 miles of electric-only range.
All vehicles come with an eight-speed automatic gearbox. The centerpiece of the cabin is a Uconnect 5 infotainment system with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The rear row has a fold-flat seat, while the front passenger enjoys an optional screen. Rear-seat entertainment is available. The system’s driver-assist features include adaptive cruise control, Pre-Collision Assist with pedestrian and bicycle detection, Brake Override Warning, Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control. Standard equipment on the 2019 Grand Cherokee SRT will include Homelink (convenience), front cross traffic assist, distance warning system, park distance control
2022 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71
The completely redesigned Tahoe—together with the GMC Yukon—is a highly functional three-row SUV that offers comfort, quietness, and towing capacity. The system has been refined by discarding the old solid-axle rear suspension in favor of an independent rear suspension, as seen on cars and crossovers. This modification offers you a significant improvement in ride, handling, and interior space.
2022 GMC Hummer EV
The all-new electric Hummer SUV and pickup truck promises an off-road-ready vehicle with sports-car performance. The return of the nameplate is spearheaded by the five-seat, four-door pickup truck. Both of these vehicles have a 5-foot pickup bed with a power tonneau cover and multifunction tailgate. Both have detachable glass roof panels for an open-air driving experience.
Among the features is the ability to ‘crab walk’ (move diagonally), up to 18 cameras for negotiating trails, and available Super Cruise driver assistance. First out of the gate is the full-featured Edition 1 pickup truck boasting 1,000-hp and promising 350-plus miles of range. The Hummer EV follows shortly after, with approximately 830 horsepower. Other less powerful and longer-range versions of each will be offered the next two years, including the SUV.
2022 Land Rover Defender
The Defender SUV is a throwback to the classic, but in a contemporary style. A turbo four- or six-cylinder engine, or a supercharged V8 are available. The stroller can accommodate twins, three children, or a single parent with one child. The two-door and four-door models are available, while five to seven passengers can sit in the different seating configurations.
A comprehensive list of off-road-ready features includes selectable modes to help traverse a variety of terrains. With the six-cylinder, acceleration is plentiful. The ride is steady but firm, and handling is a bit ponderous. The seats are extremely comfy, and the interior design has a safari feel to it. The new infotainment system is sluggish and distracting to use. At least it’s compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. FCW, AEB, BSW, and RCTW are the most common names. Cruise control is a standard option. Adaptive cruise control is available as an optional upgrade.
